Back to School!

Jul 24

It’s that time…back to school! Three words. So simple, yet these three words spark very different responses from different people.

And I’ve got proof. I asked a dozen of my friends to tell me, in five words or less, what they think when they hear those three words. Some of these friends are stay at home moms and dads, some work from home and some work out of the home. All of them have children ranging from 3 months to 18 years. These are some of my favorites:

• Bittersweet
• Bummer that summer is over
• No more sleeping in
• Sad, depressed
• Quiet
• Wooohooooo!!!!!
• Clean House
• Parental freedom
• Football

If you’re an educator, those three words mean something else all together. “Back to school” starts creeping in even earlier and while parents are running around shopping for backpacks and new shoes, you are spending that time in your classroom getting ready for everyone else’s “back to school.” You’re putting up bulletin boards, labeling desks and writing letters to introduce yourself to a new group of students. You’re already back to school!

Like our teachers, principals and guidance counselors, we, at Core Essential Values, have been feeling that excitement of back to school for quite some time. Our anticipation started in April when our curriculum products were made available to order. Today, the day has finally come for the release of the 2014/2015 curriculum…the best ever! Seriously. We’ve listened to teachers, guidance counselors, principals, parents and everyone in between when they told us what we could do better and how we can make their days easier.

My role with Core Essential Values is customer service…which mostly means people call me when they have a problem. Because of this, I’ve got two new favorite resources in the Core Essentials curriculum that I cant wait for you to see!

The first is a very simple, one page document titled “Where is Everything”. This can be found in each monthly folder and will be your quick-reference guide to find where each of the resources are located within the folder. Print it out one time and post it somewhere handy. You’ll love it.

The second is also included in each monthly folder and is called “Core Implementation Guide”. If you’ve ever wondered how you to best use the curriculum and all of the components included, the Implementation Guide is for you. First, it tells you what’s new in the curriculum and then gives you ideas & suggestions on how to use each piece. Whether you’re using Core Essentials for the first time or you’re a veteran, you’ll want to take a few minutes to check this out!

One of our goals is to make character education in your school part of your day, not another thing you have to do in your day. We want to help you infuse the monthly Big Idea into your busy days effortlessly. These new resources will help get you there. You’ll have so much free time, you’ll want to call me just to talk! Right?

So as another summer leads to another school year and impending doom becomes nervous excitement, I’d like to thank you. If you took the time from the fleeting summer days to read this, chances are you believe character education is important for our students and you’re giving your time to make that happen. For that, I’m thankful.

To talk to Misty, give her a call. She’d love to talk!
