With Honor

Nov 07

This month, Core Essential Values is focusing on the Big Idea of honor: letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. This Big Idea fits perfectly with the holidays and remembrances on our calendars this month, and we will definitely help your family make the connection between honor and those special days.

But what about today? How can your family talk about and practice honor on any given Monday, any random afternoon, any time this month?

Honor can be seen in the way we treat each other, the way we speak to each other, and what we expect of each other. For example, if you leave your cereal bowl on the table, who do you think will pick it up? Does expecting your mom or dad to pick up after you show them that you value them, or does it show them that you think you are more important than they are — too important to pick up your own bowl from the table?

Opening doors for people, saying, “Please,” and “Thank you,” listening carefully while others are speaking, respecting and helping restaurant servers, not leaving discarded clothes all over the department store dressing room, even writing thank you notes for gifts — all of these gestures show honor to others.

This month, talk together as a family about ways you see people honoring each other. Share some ways that you will work on showing honor to others so they see you know how valuable they really are.
